A proper understanding of your towing weights is crucial because if you’re overweight, you are liable. Some consequences for towing incorrectly include:
- Insurance companies will not cover you.
- Towing overweight is against the law.
- Incorrect loading can cause your caravan to sway and put lives in danger.
- You can damage your tow vehicle’s motor, tow bar, and other running gear.
- You could be fined and have your caravan towed away.

towing weight limits
Why Weighing is important!
Mobile Safe Weigh will weigh your towing vehicle and caravan, camper trailer, horse float, boat trailer and motorhomes to make sure you are within the legal limitations.
It doesn’t take much to exceed any of the compliance limits with excess payload. We also work with you to build tools, specific to your combination, for you to use at home which enables you to monitor your weight and balance at home.
You will receive a detailed 4-page report outlining:
- Individual wheel weights
- Individual axle weights
- Compliance limits GVM, GCM, GTM, ATM, TBM
- Side to side balance
- Available payload
Tow bars, from 1992 all bars will have a plate attached that lists the maximum towing weight, the maximum ball load, and the make and model of vehicle the bar was designed for.
If this weight is higher than the cars specified then the car tow-able weight is used, if the bar weight is lower than the car tow able weight then the bar weight is used, so it is important to have a tow bar that is properly designed to match or exceed your cars towing capacity.
